If you are wondering what is the difference between the Prius and the Prius Prime, well the Prius is an HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) that generates electricity using gasoline, whereas the Prius Prime is fueled with a combination of batteries and a gas tank.

You can find the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime at a starting MSRP of $32,975. With an impressive 127 combined MPGe (the equivalent of the EPA to calculate fuel efficiency for electric vehicles). To give you some context, the Department of Energy of the U.S. has recently estimated that the average fuel efficiency of a gasoline car is 24.4 MPG.

The experts give this car a score of 8.1

4. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The South Korean company offers the Sonata in two versions: gasoline and hybrid. You can find the hybrid at a starting price of $30,800 and a combined MPG of 51 – A big difference between the fuel efficiency of the Toyota Prius Prime and the Hyundai Sonata hybrid, but still the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offers double the average efficiency of a gas-only car.

3. Honda Accord Hybrid

The Japanese automaker only has 2 hybrid models: the Accord Hybrid and the CR-V Hybrid. The Honda Accord Hybrid is Honda’ bet to hybrid sedans. With a combined fuel efficiency of 44 MPG, the Accord Hybrid has a starting price of $32, 895.

Conclusion

It is surprising to see that only Asian automakers made it to this list. As we have seen during the last few years, most American automakers decided to discontinue hybrid cars. For example, models like the Ford Fusion Hybrid were discontinued in 2022 and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Nonetheless, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, particularly the PHEVs (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles), represent less stressful options for American drivers compared to all-electric cars.
