Technology has been rapidly evolving. Years ago, we saw a car with cruise control that allowed the driver to maintain a constant speed without using the gas pedal.
Now, the automakers are offering vehicles that can be driven hands-free, and this technology is more affordable than you think.

Just recently GM announced the expansion of the Super Cruise Network across the U.S. and Canada increasing to 750,000 miles of coverage, the largest for a hands-free technology in North America.
It means that owners of GM vehicles with Super Cruise will be able to drive hands-free on more roads in the country. If you are curious to know what this technology is and what is the most affordable way you can access it, then keep reading…
What Is Super Cruise?
Super Cruise is General Motors driving assisting technology that provides the convenience of driving hands-free on compatible roads.

Something to have clear here is that the Super Cruise only assists the driver. That is to say, this technology does not drive the car by itself. The driver still has to pay attention to the road.
How Does It Work?
The Super Cruise technology uses GPS (Global Positioning System) data and a high-precision map to know where the vehicle is located. Also, it uses cameras installed in the car to detect the lines marked on the road and thus keep the car within the lane.
This technology is also capable of accelerating or braking to keep a driver-specified gap with the car ahead traveling in the same direction.
Safety First: Pay Attention To The Road
Here me out, this hands-off driving technology is super nice and advanced, but it does not drive the car by itself or turn the car into an autonomous vehicle.
In general, this system must be used as a supplement to make driving easier, but the driver has to pay attention to the road at all times. GM says that although Super Cruise is a hands-free driving system, you’re still responsible for the vehicle.

The Super Cruise works with the Driver Attention System which constantly monitors the position of the driver’s head and the driver’s gaze. The system sends an alert to the driver to pay attention to the road and take control of the steering wheel if needed.
A cool safety feature is that if the driver does not respond to the system’s alerts, the car will stop, turn on the hazard light, and call for help – all by itself!
GM Offers Hands-Off Driving Experience For Less
Tesla is another company that offers a hands-off driving technology called Autopilot. It comes standard in all the new Tesla Models.

So, let’s compare. The most affordable vehicle on Tesla’s website is the Model 3 which right now shows a starting price of $35,990. On top of this, you need the Full Self-Driving package activated which costs $12,000. That is a total of $47,990 to get the hands-free driving experience.
On another hand, the most affordable GM car you can get right now on Chevrolet’s website with Super Cruise is the Bolt EUV which shows a starting price of $27,800 for a brand-new unit.
There is also an extra cost for the Super Cruise. But listen, the Super Cruise is included for the first 3 years from the dealership. And after the 3 years, you can pay just $25 per month to keep using this feature.

Therefore, you can get the hands-off driving experience 40% cheaper with a Chevrolet Bolt EUV compared with a Tesla.
But there is a caveat, General Motors has discontinued the Bolt EUV, so this year is your last chance to find a brand new 2023 Chevy Bolt.
